The Maltz Challenge 2009

On March 27, 2009, the ladies participated in the 3rd Annual Maltz Challenge, a gruelling workout performed across the country in honor and in memory of US Airforce Pararescue Jumper Master Sergeant Michael Maltz.

On March 23, 2003, Master Sergeant Maltz died in a helicopter crash while on a rescue mission in Afghanistan. He and his fellow servicemen represent all that is good and honorable about US intentions in Afghanistan.

Consistency is key!

Faster? Further? Lighter? Whatever you want from your running, what you need is more consistent training.

Consistency is the most essential piece of training. Without consistency, you aren't going anywhere. You're not going to get faster. You're not going to run further. You're not going to lose weight, lower your blood pressure, finish that marathon or achieve any of your other running goals.

Here are some ways to add consistency to your running:

1. Run with others: There's nothing like the social pressure of knowing that a friend or a group is waiting for you to make you head out the door. It's also often more fun than running alone, especially if you're doing a long run or speed work.

2. Try something new: The fitness world is full of new, fun-filled events. Don't let yourself get bored with an endless string of 5Ks and 10Ks. Try cross-country fell running and even triathlons and adventure races.

3. Find a coach: Maybe the kind who yells at you every once in a while, but probably not. A coach's first job is to motivate you in a way no one else can. Their second job is to map out your training. And their final job is to prevent you from straying from that programme, probably by running too much or too fast. You can find a coach by joining a club, asking around, calling specialist running shops and checking the internet.

4. Join the 'X' revolution: Despite the many proven benefits of cross-training, there are still too many runners who only run. Incorporate strength training, cycling, elliptical training, yoga, stair-climbing, pool-running, rowing and walking. Why? Not because these routines will make us faster in our next half-marathon, but because they make us fitter all-round and less prone to injury.

5. Keep a log: Your training log is a great source of the kind of motivation that builds consistency. It beckons to be filled in, reveals the secrets of your training and racing successes, and a look back through it can provide lots of inspiration.

6. Run early: You want to get something done? Do it early in the day. Everything gets tougher later in the day, as various tasks and responsibilities start ganging up on you.

7. Schedule it: You've got your office calendar, your diary, your Palm Pilot, your napkin with the scrawled list of stuff you absolutely, positively have to get done today. So use it. Be sure to include your run. Carve out an hour in your day. The experts all agree that exercise is one of your most important daily activities. Make it happen.

8. Run on different surfaces: See how many different surfaces you can run on in a week: Tarmac, gravel, trail, grass, track, treadmill. Each stresses your leg muscles in a slightly different way, helping to prevent injuries. If possible, avoid concrete, the hardest and least accommodating surface for runners, altogether.

DEA Museum in Los Angeles

The DEA Museum's traveling exhibit "Target America: Opening Eyes to the Damage Drugs Cause," an interactive exhibit that explores the science behind the damaging effects of illegal drugs on the mind and body and the other tremendous costs associated with the production, sale and use of illegal drugs will be on exhibit at the California Science Center in Los Angeles, California from October 2, 2008 through May 3, 2009.

The Science Center is located at Exposition Park in Los Angeles -- open daily from 10am to 5pm except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. Admission to Science Center exhibits is free. "3 PLUS 2" Training Week!

To become a faster and stronger runner, Runner's World recommends the "3 Plus 2" training program, which consists of 3 quality runs and at least 2 cross training workouts each week. The cumulative training effect of this workout over 12 to 18 weeks translates into improved fitness, more speed and better endurance.

The 3 quality runs should include:

* TRACK REPEATS - run relatively short distances (400m - 2000m) repeatedly, with brief recovery intervals. Track repeats are designed to improve maximal oxygen consumption, running economy and speed. For example: run 6 times 800 meters with 90 second rest in between. Rest by walking or jogging.

* TEMPO RUN - begin with easy running for 1 to 2 miles and gradually increase pace to your designated 5 K pace. For example: 1 mile warmup, 2 miles at short tempo (short tempo = 15 seconds slower than your per-mile 5 K pace), 1 mile cooldown.

* LONG RUN - this run is relative to your goals and present training. For Baker to Vegas training, this workout requires steady running from 3 to 8 miles at a pace slightly slower than your 5 K pace. Try by starting out slower and pick up pace during the middle phase of the long run.

Our team is comprised of 20 runners and 4 alternate runners, all Special Agents of the DEA Los Angeles Field Division, which includes offices in Los Angeles, Riverside, Ventura and Las Vegas.

On March 14 and 15, 2009, our team will compete, for the first time in over 6 years, in the Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup relay race, which is the biggest and most prestigious law enforcement athletic event in the world. 2009 will mark the 25th anniversary of the Baker to Vegas race.

The Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup is is a grueling 120-mile footrace through the harsh climate and rough terrain of the Mojave Desert and has been held for the past 24 years. It is the largest law enforcement athletic event of its kind worldwide with over 8,000 runners, support personnel, Chiefs of Police, various outside agency department heads, and family and friends in attendance.
